Numeracy at Benalla 31
Numeracy is a Primary Focus at Benalla 31. All children are given an individual interview at the beginning of the year, or when they enter the school. This interview gives the class teacher a comprehensive knowledge of what each child understands about numeracy and strategies that they use to solve problems. Our school devotes one hour each day to the Numeracy Block, where each lesson builds on what the children know. Lessons are focussed with a small introduction exploring themes and strategies, whole class activities and a conclusion where learning is shared. |

Literacy
Our school has a strong emphasis on providing all students with engaging programs to be able to become successful readers and writers. All classes have a dedicated Literacy block at the beginning of the day when children’s learning potential is strong. All classes have a minimum of 10 hours of explicit Literacy teaching each week. Children also experience Literacy activities and apply their skills throughout the day and week through all subject areas. Individual learning plans ensure that all children are catered for within the curriculum. Students who require additional support in the area of Literacy are catered for with specially design programs which may be on an individual or small group basis. Our school literacy program is enhanced by a visiting Speech Therapist for children who need assistance in this area.
Our Literacy program encompasses
- Reading- successful readers are able to read and understand a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction materials and can apply their knowledge.
- Writing – successful writers understand that writing is for a purpose and write a variety of material for themselves or others to read. The development of spelling is an important part of the writing process.
- Speaking and Listening – successful speakers and listeners know it is important to listen carefully to each other and share with others using confident voices.
